What to Pack for Spiti Valley (2026): Essential Clothing, Layering & Gear Checklist
By Varun Tyagi (Lead Expedition Captain) · Updated 2026-09-06
⚡ Quick Take: Spiti weather oscillates wildly between blazing 22°C UV sunshine at noon and sub-zero -3°C winds at night. Pack on the 3-layer system: thermal base layer, fleece insulation layer, and wind/water-resistant outer shell.
1. The 3-Layer Clothing System (Why One Heavy Jacket Fails)
When people pack for Spiti, they usually make one of two mistakes: either they pack one giant coat that makes them sweat during sunny afternoons, or they don't bring enough windproof gear and freeze the moment the wind picks up.
The golden rule for mountain travel is the 3-layer system:
Layer 1: Base Layer (Moisture Wicking)
- 2 to 3 pairs of Merino wool or synthetic thermal tops and bottoms.
- Avoid 100% cotton inners. Cotton traps sweat against your skin, chills fast, and can trigger hypothermia when evening winds hit.
Layer 2: Mid Layer (Thermal Insulation)
- 2 lightweight fleece sweaters or zippered pullovers.
- 1 packable down feather jacket. It packs down to the size of a water bottle but traps tremendous body heat.
Layer 3: Outer Shell (Wind & Water Blocker)
- 1 heavy windcheater or hooded parka with a wind-resistant shell. High passes like Kunzum La (14,931 ft) have ferocious 50 km/h cold winds.
2. Footwear & Socks: Protecting Your Feet
You will be walking on loose gravel, wet stone riverbeds, and century-old monastery paths.
- Main Trekking Shoes: 1 pair of broken-in hiking shoes with deep rubber grip (such as Quechua MH500 or Woodland). Make sure you wear them before the trip to prevent blisters.
- Casual Camp Shoes: 1 pair of comfortable slip-on sneakers for long tempo drives and relaxing around homestay common rooms.
- Socks: 3 pairs of thick woolen trekking socks plus 3 pairs of standard everyday cotton socks.
3. UV Sun Protection & Cold-Desert Skincare
Because the air is thin at 12,000+ feet, UV intensity is roughly 40% stronger than in the plains. Sunburn and dry skin happen fast without protection:
- Sunscreen: Broad-spectrum SPF 50+ (PA++++). Reapply every 3 hours during day trips.
- Lip Balm: SPF lip balm or petroleum jelly. The dry mountain wind will chap your lips overnight without it.
- Moisturizer: Deep hydrating body cream or cold-pressed coconut oil for dry skin.
- Polarized Sunglasses: UV-400 sunglasses to protect your eyes from intense mountain glare.
4. Captain’s Personal First-Aid Checklist
Our vehicles always carry an emergency medical kit and oxygen support, but you should always keep a small personal pouch in your daypack:
- Altitude Acclimatization: Diamox (consult your doctor for dosage before travel).
- Mild Headaches & Body Aches: Paracetamol or Ibuprofen.
- Stomach Care: Electrolyte ORS sachets, Pudin Hara, and Digene.
- Motion Sickness: Avomine or Ondansetron for winding mountain hairpins.
- Small Scrapes & Blisters: Antiseptic cream and waterproof band-aids.
5. Electronics, Cash & Offline Essentials
Cash Essentials:
- ATMs in Kaza and Tabo frequently run out of cash or lose power.
- Carry ₹8,000 to ₹12,000 in physical cash per person from Delhi or Shimla for personal shopping, souvenirs, and hot snacks.
Power & Batteries:
- 20,000 mAh Power Bank: Sub-zero cold drains smartphone and camera batteries twice as fast. Keep your phone inside an inner jacket pocket close to body heat.
- Multi-Plug Adapter: Mountain homestays often have only 1 or 2 wall sockets per room.
- Offline Maps & Music: Download your Google Maps offline areas for Himachal Pradesh and your favorite Spotify playlists before leaving Delhi.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Can I wear shorts or skirts in Spiti Valley?
Modest attire covering shoulders and knees is strongly recommended out of cultural respect when visiting ancient Buddhist monasteries and remote Himalayan villages. Temperatures are also generally too cold for shorts.
Q: What kind of luggage is easiest to carry in Spiti?
A 50L–65L soft rucksack or duffle bag is significantly easier to stow in Tempo Travellers and carry up steep homestay staircases than bulky hard-shell spinner suitcases.
