Delhi to Spiti Valley by Road (2026): Tempo Traveller vs Car vs HRTC Bus Route Guide

The most common mistake I see people make is choosing the wrong entry route into the mountains. There are two main highways into the valley: The Kinnaur Route (Delhi → Shimla → Narkanda → Sangla → Nako → Tabo → Kaza) - Distance: ~730 km to Kaza. - Altitude Ascent: Gradual 3-day climb (Delhi 700 ft → Sangla 8,900 ft → Tabo 10,700 ft → Kaza 12,500 ft). This is the gold standard for acclimatization. - Road Condition: Smooth asphalt up to Wangtoo, followed by the famous cliff-carved rock corridors of Kinnaur. - Open Season: Open nearly 10 to 11 months a year. The Manali Route (Delhi → Chandigarh → Manali → Atal Tunnel → Batal → Kunzum Pass → Kaza) - Distance: ~570 km to Kaza. - Altitude Ascent: Extremely sharp climb from Manali (6,700 ft) straight to Kunzum Pass (14,931 ft) in just 4 to 5 hours. High risk of mountain sickness. - Road Condition: Heavy riverbed boulders, gravel, and unpaved glacier melt streams between Gramphu and Kaza. - Open Season: June to mid-October only.

Every summer, we see travelers attempting Spiti in low-clearance hatchbacks or city sedans. While the road up to Sangla or Reckong Peo is manageable, trying to push through the Gramphu-Batal river crossings or Malling Nallah in a low-ground-clearance car usually ends with: - Cracked engine oil sumps from submerged river rocks. - Damaged bumpers and bent exhausts. - Flooded air intakes in deep glacial streams. Our Recommendation: Avoid taking any vehicle with less than 190 mm ground clearance past Kaza toward Manali. If you are driving yourself, take a 4x4 SUV or join a curated high-axle tempo convoy.
