Best Time to Visit Spiti Valley (2026): Month-by-Month Weather & Road Status

⚡ Quick Take: For the complete overland loop (Shimla → Kaza → Chandratal → Manali), the ideal window is June to September when Kunzum Pass is open. For white winter snow safaris, travel between January and March via Shimla only.
1. Spiti Valley Seasons Overview
Spiti Valley — the "Middle Land" between India and Tibet — is a high-altitude cold desert sitting at an average elevation above 12,500 feet. Unlike lush green hill stations, Spiti receives negligible rainfall due to the Pir Panjal rain-shadow effect.
However, road connectivity changes drastically depending on the month you pick. There are two primary access gates into the valley:
- **The Kinnaur Gate (via Shimla, Sangla, Nako):** Remains open for almost 10–11 months a year with gradual acclimatization.
- **The Manali Gate (via Atal Tunnel, Gramphu, Kunzum Pass):** Only opens when the snow on Kunzum La (14,931 ft) melts between June and October.
2. June to September: The Prime Full Circuit Window
This is by far the most popular and scenic time to explore Spiti Valley. High-altitude mountain passes like Kunzum La open up, and the jewel of the valley — **Chandratal Lake** — becomes fully accessible for Swiss tent camping.

- **Temperature:** 12°C to 22°C during the day; 3°C to 8°C at night (sub-zero at Chandratal camp).
- **Road Status:** Both Shimla and Manali sides open. You can complete the full circular loop without backtracking.
- **Vibe:** Clear blue skies, vibrant turquoise rivers, bustling Buddhist monasteries, and blooming green pea fields across Kaza and Tabo.
3. October to November: Golden Autumn & Starry Milky Way Skies
As tourist crowds thin out in late September, Spiti transforms into a photographer's paradise. The poplar and willow trees turn fiery gold and amber.
### What to Expect:
- **Night Skies:** Best time of the year for stargazing and astrophotography with zero cloud interference.
- **Kunzum Pass Caution:** Kunzum Pass typically receives its first heavy snowfall by late October or early November and shuts down for the winter. Post-October departures operate strictly via the Shimla route.
4. December to March: White Winter & Snow Safari
Winter Spiti is an extreme, soul-stirring expedition for seasoned adventure seekers. Temperatures plummet between -15°C and -25°C in Kaza.

- **Frozen Marvels:** The Pin Valley and Lingti waterfalls freeze into solid glass ice sculptures.
- **Wildlife Sightings:** Prime time for spotting the elusive Himalayan Snow Leopard, Blue Sheep (Bharal), and Himalayan Red Fox.
- **Access Route:** Accessible only via Shimla (Delhi → Narkanda → Sangla → Tabo → Kaza) in 4x4 high-clearance vehicles with experienced mountain drivers.
